Norwegian National Olympic Distance Champion
Norwegian champion for the 5th time!

After a few weeks of getting some ok training in, I felt ready for the Olympic Distance championship. After losing the title on the long distance, I wanted to secure the most important title, the Olympic distance title!

Race day was a grey and wet day… Not so much before start, but as the start went, the rain started pouring down!

The swim was a three lap course, with a turnaround point on land and a dry land start… Normally this would not suit me, but today it would turn out to be great! I had a great start, and was right on the legs of guys I was 1.20min behind at the long distance championship, and every time we went up on land, I caught the few meters I had lost on the swim… It was a great start!

After the first transition I was 1.40min behind the leader (which I had hoped to be, at best, 2min behind before start) and 15sec in front of the next guys!

The great swim meant I could take the ride out safe in the wet weather on the technical parts, but hammer away on the flat, straight parts. After 10km I had the lead guy in sight and a gap of about 1min down to the others. I felt I had a big enough gap down to the guys behind to just slowly catch the leader, without using too much energy, so it took until 30km before I was in the lead… After that I controlled the last 10km and was first off the bike…

However, after a really bad second transition, the previous leader was 10sec in front out on the run. He is my team mate, so I knew I was the better runner over 10km, and therefore I ran slowly up to him without rushing. It was 12 degrees Celsius and bucketing down, so I was pretty cold coming off the bike, but after about 2km I had found a good pace and gotten the heat back. From there I ran away from my team mate and secured a win of about 2min! My run split was 35.46min on trail, with the last 2-3km going easy, so I’m very happy with that!

It was a great day for me, and I was very happy to take home another Norwegian Championship gold medal! Especially after losing the long distance champs!
